Depression, Suicidal Thoughts & Learned Helplessness

What it is. Depression can be Major Depressive Disorder (per DSM-5), post-traumatic anhedonia after a car accident, or the numb hopelessness that follows long-term emotional neglect. Symptoms include low motivation, negative self-talk, and in severe cases self-harm or passive death wishes.

What the research says. Meta-analyses show the best outcomes when SSRIs are paired with talk therapy. Activity scheduling, vitamin D, consistent exercise, and social rhythm routines improve mood. IFS and inner-critic work address the shame loops common in adults who grew up scapegoated or chronically criticized.

How I help. Using CBT, we challenge automatic "nothing matters" thoughts; existential dialogues surface hidden purpose; IFS separates the depressed part from core Self; and weekly accountability nudges you to move, socialize, and reengage with meaningful goals. When appropriate, I liaise with physicians or psychiatrists for medication management.
